The descendants of
Isaac Odum
and
Elizabeth Warner
Wayne County, Georgia
1828 - ?
Isaac Odum, son of James and Mary Odum, was born April 28, 1828 in Bulloch County, Georgia. He married Elizabeth Warner September 13, 1849 in Wayne County, Georgia. They were counted in Wayne County on the 1850 federal census and had one son, Leonard who is shown as three months old when the census was taken.
Elizabeth Warner was born about 1827 in Georgia and was probably the daughter of William and Sarah Warner of Wayne County. The 1850 census shows Isaac and Elizabeth living next door to the Warners.
I could not find Isaac and his family on the 1860 census. However, Isaac did serve during the Civil War enlisting November 1862 as a private in Company K of the 54th Georgia Infantry Regiment. He was captured at Marietta, Georgia July 3, 1864 during Sherman's campaign and imprisoned at Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois. Isaac was released from Camp Douglas on June 16, 1865 after the end of the war.
I could find no record of Isaac or Elizabeth Odum on the 1870 or any subsequent census. All indications are that they died before 1870. The 1870 census, shows 3 of their children were scatted among different households in Wayne County:
- Leonard Odum, age 20, is shown as a day laborer in the household of Sidney Pearson (female) in Wayne County. Leonard is one of several young men of different surnames shown as day laborers living in what appears to be a boarding house. This is Isaac and Elizabeth's son listed on the 1850 census.
- Sarah Odum, age 12, is listed as a house servant in the household of James and Martha Herrin. This is 6 households away from Elizabeth Warner Odum's parents, William and Sarah Warner. Her 1926 death certificate lists her father as Isaac Odum.
- Godfrey Odum, age 6, is listed in the household of Sarah Smith, Elizabeth Warner Odum's sister. I have not been able to locate this Godfrey Odum on any subsequent census. He either died or it is possible that this Godfrey Odum might be the same Godfrey Odum listed on the same census as a son of Henry Odum (Isaac's brother) in Appling County, GA.
Mary Odum, another child of Isaac and Elizabeth Odum, was not found on the 1870 census but appears on the 1880 Wayne County, Georgia census as Mary Bennett, age 26, wife of Westberry Bennett. She is identified through Sarah Odum living in the household and listed as sister-in-law to Westberry Bennett.
William Thomas Odum is probably another child of Isaac and Elizabeth Odum. William first appears on census records on the 1870 census in Pierce County, Georgia, as a 16 year old in "domestic service" in the Isham Aldridge household. Isham Aldridge is related to Elizabeth Warner's family through marriage and William may have been placed there after Isaac's and Elizabeth's deaths. I have no proof of William's parentage, but the probability is based on his age and lack of identification of other parents, William's middle name of "Thomas" (Isaac's mother's maiden name) and that William named his first son "Isaac." William's family information is included below after that of Isaac's confirmed children.
